February 2020 Main Event

High Income in Turbulent TimesMarvin Appel will present several strategies for earning investment income, potentially 5% to 6% or more, with risk management even in the face of economic uncertainty and low interest rates. Strategies discussed will include trading corporate high yield and floating rate bond funds, selecting preferred stocks and covered call writing. In addition, Appel will provide his 2020 stock and bond market outlook. You Will Learn:
  • How to benefit from 5% yields in corporate high-yield bond mutual funds while managing risk, even while there is a danger of recession
  • About preferred stocks yielding more than 6%
  • How to identify when market conditions are especially favorable for covered call writing
A Tactical Strategy for Emerging MarketsEmerging markets stocks have rewarded investors with very handsome returns in the past. However, they have significantly lagged the S&P 500 index for the past nine years and, in fact, over the past 12 years have returned less than 1% per year on average while losing almost 60% of their value in the 2007–2008 bear market. Since nothing in investing is permanent, the question is when the next opportunity in emerging markets will present itself. Appel will present a simple trend-following strategy that can be used to recognize potential opportunities in emerging markets while remaining out of that part of the market when trends are unfavorable. You Will Learn:
  • How to recognize opportune times to invest in emerging markets and when U.S. equities are potentially the better bet
  • Why emerging markets appear to offer a long-term attractive opportunity for equity investors
  • 2020 equity market outlook
